Radon Testing on Lookout Mountain, GA and TN

People searching for radon testing on Lookout Mountain are often not sure which side of the state line they are on, and it does not matter to us. The mountain runs from Chattanooga southwest into Alabama, and there are towns named Lookout Mountain in both Tennessee and Georgia. We test and fix homes on both. We serve the mountain from Chattanooga. We do not have an office up there, and you will not find us on a street corner on the ridge. You call, we come to you.

What makes a mountain house different

Many homes on Lookout Mountain sit on slopes. That means a lot of them have a lower level cut into the hillside, a walkout basement, or a crawl space under part of the house and a slab under another. A house like that touches the ground in more than one way, and radon can come in through each of them. Older stone-and-block homes on the mountain have their own pattern of cracks, and some have a dirt-floor section that was never closed in. We look at how your particular house meets the ground before we say what it needs.

Radon is a gas that comes from natural uranium in rock and soil. We cannot tell you what a house on your street will read, and the neighbor's result does not predict yours. Two houses on the same road can read very differently. The only way to know is to test.

Testing

A test is a short or long measurement placed in the lowest level you use. Our radon testing page explains what we place and for how long, and you get a written number back. If it comes in at or above the level the EPA says to fix, the next step is a mitigation system. The page on radon levels explains what counts as normal and what counts as high.

Mitigation on a hillside house

A standard fix pulls air from under the slab or from under a sealed liner in the crawl space and sends it through a pipe to a point above the roofline. On a house built into a slope, the routing takes more thought. The pipe has to go where it is not in the way of a deck, a walkout door or a window, and where the fan can be reached and the noise is not facing a neighbor. We walk the house with you and pick the path. Our mitigation page covers how a system works, and the cost guide explains what moves the price.

Buying or selling up there

A lot of mountain houses change hands with a deadline. If a buyer's inspection turned up a radon number, or you want a test done before listing, call early. Our home sale radon guide walks through the timing. If your inspection result was high and you are not sure what comes next, see what to do after a high result.
